A noite foi dos canadenses na festa americana da TV. O seriado Schitt’s Creek ganhou 9 prêmios Emmy, ou seja, ganhou em todas as categorias em que foi indicado. Uma produção do canal estatal canadense CBC em parceria com o canal americano Pop, parte do conglomerado Viacom, Schitt’s Creek tem sido indicado todos os anos ao Emmy desde sua estreia, em 2015, mas só agora foi realmente laureado por seu sucesso. Além dos 7 Emmys das categorias principais, o seriado ganhou dois Emmy em categorias técnicas e ao todo ganhou 9.
Outro grande vencedor da noite foi o seriado dramático da HBO, Succession, ficando com o Emmy de melhor série dramática e melhor ator dramático, entre outros (veja abaixo).
Zendaya foi a zebra da noite e levou o prêmio Emmy de melhor atriz dramática por sua atuação em Euphoria da HBO. Com isso Zendaya bateu um recorde: é a atriz mais jovem a ganhar o Emmy nessa categoria.
Os prêmios Emmy em sua 72a edição qualificou programação que estreou entre 1º de junho de 2019 e 31 de maio de 2020. Os jurados fazem parte da Academia de Artes e Ciências da TV americana.
